Traditional wisdom says that while working on a startup in the healthcare domain, especially one that is targeting India 3 markets & beyond, affordability & accessibility should be the mainstay of any proposed solution. In reality, that doesn’t stand true in a lot of instances.

The advancement of technology has opened up multiple avenues of value addition across the patient & care journey. We have witnessed a slew of ground up innovation across the healthcare spectrum in the past decade, with the last two years accelerating transformation.

Based on my experience of working on strategic research projects for large businesses & startups from the healthcare domain, the need is to focus on understanding —

What does portability & mobility mean for the beneficiaries?

Below are two scenarios that I can think of:

  1. Designing a health insurance product that is based on the disease types that are prevalent in the region. This way you have a better representation of the population and the risk can be managed more efficiently. A larger premium pool that is affordable to the insured and proportionate payout in case of any claim by the insurer.
  2. In another scenario when you are dealing with an infant who is in need of critical care. The solution should encompass the entire patient journey of care — point of primary care to point of speciality care, including the travel. Handoffs have to be seamless & synergetic in nature.
